It was also the first gold coin issued by the Republic of Panama, and the first gold coin minted by The Franklin Mint.   This 1976 One Hundred Balboa Gold Coin is issued in a special sealed cachet and is a certified First Day of Minting Proof struck on February 26, 1976. It contains 8.16 grams of 900/1000 fine gold and was minted with a full proof finish in strictly limited edition by The Franklin Mint. No other 1976 Proofs of this coin will ever again be minted.   The obverse of the coin shows the year of minting and bears a portrait of Vasco Nufiezde Balboa, sculptured by the distinguished medallic artist James T. Ferrell.
