The obverse of the coin shows the year of minting and bears a portrait of Vasco Nuhez de Balboa, sculptured by the distinguished medallic artist James T. Ferrell. Balboa was the great Spanish adventurer and explorer whose expedition across Panama led to his discovery of the Pacific Ocean. The reverse, bearing the name of the country and the denomination of the coin, also depicts the national coat of arms of the Republic of Panama. The reverse design was sculptured by the internationally renowned medallist Gilroy Roberts. This coin portrays one of the most famous and most important gold coins of the twentieth century.
