At the time of minting the coin had a face value equivalent to fifty dollars in United States currency. It contains 6.21 grams of 500/1000 fine gold and is minted with a full proof finish.   Issued in its special sealed cachet, this One Hundred Dollar Gold Coin is a certified First Day of Minting Proof struck on May 22, 1975. Proofs of this historic coin were minted in strictly limited edition by The Franklin Mint. No other Proofs of this gold coin will ever be minted again.   The face of the coin commemorates the landing of the English ship O//Ve Blossom in 1625. Captain John Powell, on behalf of his patron Sir William Courteen, claimed Barbados in that year "For James K of E [King of England] and of this Island."   The coin's reverse bears the Barbados coat of arms together with the legend 350th Anniversary. The coat of arms features the bearded fig tree (Los Barbados) from which the name Barbados was derived.
