Included in the coat of arms is a depiction of one of the mahogany trees which, since the 17th century, have been an important factor in the economy of Belize. Once known as Honduras, the territory which today encompasses Belize was claimed by Spain in the 16th century. However, after the British defeated Spain in a naval engagement off St. George's Cay, the country became British Honduras. The name Belize was adopted on June 1, 1973. This 1979 One Hundred Dollar Gold Coin is a certified First Day of Minting Proof struck on April 19, 1979 and issued in a sealed cachet.
