Both coins were issued in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Parliament of the Bahamas, which was established in 1729. At that time, Captain Woodes Rogers, Royal Governor of the Bahamas, acting under authority from the British Crown, issued a proclamation summoning a representative assembly. The gold coin bears an official portrait of Princess Anne of Great Britain?the first portrait of Princess Anne ever to appear on a monetary coin. In September of 1979 Princess Anne visited the Bahamas representing the Crown at state ceremonies held to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Parliament. The obverse also carries the inscription: 250 Dollars '250th Anniversary of the Parliament of the Bahamas ? Princess Anne Commemorative Visit. On the obverse of the sterling silver coin is the Parliamentary Mace that, according to English tradition, is the symbol of authority and represents the sovereign in Parliament. The coin is inscribed with the legend 25 Dollars ? 250th Anniversary of the Parliament of the Bahamas ? 1729-1979. The reverse of each coin displays the coat of arms of the Bahamas and the date. Both of these coins were minted with a full Proof finish by The Franklin Mint. Issued in special sealed cachets, these coins are certified First Day of Minting Proofs struck for collectors on December 13, 1979. WANT TO SEE MORE???
