Description
Here is an 1797 coin which was was unquestionably exposed to the dangers of pirate hijackers (it has numerous marks, called chops, which were applied in the Orient by merchants who verified its authenticity and to this day attest to that and the fact that it actually travelled the seas). In a black and silver presentation case with information on the coin and it's history. Note that this coin was legal tender in the United States by law until 1857; of course it was minted before there was a mint in the United States. This romantic coin was immortalized by Robert Louis Stevenson in his "Treasure Island:" "Oxen and wainropes would not bring me back again to that accursed island and the worst dreams that I ever have and when I hear...the sharp voice of Captain Flint still ringing in my ears 'Pieces of Eight! Pieces of Eight!...'" Historic; attractive and great Americana. Winning bidder pays actual postage and insurance.
