1862 5 CENT FRACTIONAL NOTE Fractional Currency: Notes of less than a dollar in denomation were issued by the U.S. Government from 1862 to 1876. At the start of the Civil War,coins acquired a premium. They soon vanished from circulation. As a result, the government decided to print fractional denomation notes.These notes were redeemable for postage not coins. Almost $369 million were issued. Only $2 million are still outstanding. UP FOR BID is a series 1862 5 cent US Fractional Note dated July 17th, 1862. Has the design # 164 First Issue and is a FR# 1230 note with straight edges and monogram.
