Description
This is a 1910 French Rooster 20 Franc Gold Coin. Description: French Rooster 20 franc gold coinMinted 1899 - 1914Fineness: .900Actual Gold Content: .1867 troy ounce Specifications: Composition: .900 Gold, Gold Content: 0.1867 oz., Weight: 6.4516 grams, Size: 21.0 mm History: This is a French 20 franc GOLD coin made between 1899 and 1914. This attractive coin was made prior to World War I and was a popular gold coin at the time. Contains 18.67% of an ounce of gold in it. (Almost twice that of the US $5 1/10th eagle coin.) About 21 mm in diameter. Depicts a rooster design on one side and an ornamental head on the other. The reverse depicts a proud, fully plumed rooster along with the denomination (20 Fcs), the date, and the words "LIBERTE · EGALITE · FRATERNITE". This phrase, which translates to "freedom, equality, fraternity", was popularized during the French Revolution against Louis XVI.The original production run of French 20 Francs Rooster gold coins occurred between 1898 and 1914, with surviving coins from the initial year considered especially rare The original mintage of these coins was fairly limited. Scarcity was increased by the melting of millions of gold 20 Francs during the 1930's after private ownership of gold was outlawed in the United States. Even more were melted in the 1970's and 80's when gold soared to $850 per ounce. Surviving French 20 Franc Rooster gold coins in Uncirculated condition, are especially desirable today. Minted from 1899 to 1914, these traditional French gold coins feature the dynamic image of the Gallic Rooster, or Coq Gaulois, one of the national symbols of the France since the Middle Ages. The Gallic Rooster played an important role during the French Revolution as an image of revolutionary vigilance, confidence, and pugnacity. In the 1830s the rooster temporarily replaced the fleur-de-lis as the official national emblem until Napoleon III reinstated the fleur-de-lis once again in the mid-1800s. Appearing today on French stamps and as the insignia for French national sports teams, the French Rooster continues to stand as a proud emblem of the fighting spirit of liberty and independence.
